  • Industry: Panel System Installation
  • Application: Hat track leveling and panel alignment
  • Shim Type: U-shaped plastic shims
  • Key Benefit: Even substrate for consistent panel installation

Overview

In panel system installations, creating a level and consistent substrate is critical for proper alignment and long-term performance.

U-shaped plastic shims provide an efficient way to space and support structural components without interfering with fasteners, making them ideal for framing systems like hat track.

In this project, Wm. P. Somerville used Grove U-shaped plastic shims to create a stable, even surface for panel installation, improving both accuracy and efficiency.

The Challenge

This project required installing panels over a hat track system mounted to a horizontal bar.

Key challenges included:

  • Achieving a level surface across the hat track
  • Properly spacing and supporting the track before panel installation
  • Preventing misalignment that could affect panel placement
  • Maintaining consistency across multiple attachment points

Without a level substrate, panels can install unevenly, leading to alignment issues and rework.

The Solution

Grove U-shaped plastic shims were used to shim out the hat track and create an even surface prior to panel installation.

Because of their open design, U-shaped shims could be easily placed around fasteners without removal, allowing installers to:

  • Quickly position shims around mounting points
  • Adjust spacing without disrupting the installation
  • Create a consistent, level base for panel attachment

This approach simplified the process and reduced the need for repeated adjustments.

Why U-Shaped Plastic Shims Work

U-shaped plastic shims are designed for applications where fasteners need to remain in place:

  • Open-slot design: Easily fits around screws and anchors
  • Consistent thickness: Ensures uniform spacing and support
  • Quick installation: Reduces time spent adjusting around fasteners
  • Reliable performance: Maintains alignment during and after installation

These features make them especially effective for panel systems, framing, and structural alignment.

Results

Using U-shaped plastic shims in this project helped:

  • Provide precise spacing and structural support
  • Ensure a clean, level finish across all panels
  • Prevent misalignment during installation
  • Streamline the overall panel installation workflow

Installers were able to work more efficiently while maintaining consistent results.
